For twenty years Niki Welde has been in charge of the Fergus Falls girls’ cross country team.  As 2022 gets underway, Welde has a solid nucleus returning from the 2021 season, led by state qualifier Cassie Wellman.

Wellman is joined by Becca Schindler, Sarah Grotberg, Naomi Dummer, Julia Anderson, Hannah Scharnberg, Miah Schmidt, Sonja Lahti and Jenna Thorson as returning letter winners. Schmidt, Schindler and Karolyn Papon will serve as team captains. Welde expects Savannah Lee and Violet McConn to contribute at the varsity level as well.

“We have a group of girls who put a great summer of training in,” said Welde.  “I am really looking forward to seeing them run as a team.  I think Experience and summer mileage will help them to find success this year.  We also have a nice group of middle school girls coming up.  With some returning eighth-graders and a nice showing of seventh-graders.”

Brynn Blondeau, Olivia Budke, Alana Higbee, Eliesha Krause, Maggie Lysne, Madilyn Michael, Lydia Uggerud, Maria Schroeder and Syler Steinbrenner are middle school runners in the program.

Welde will be assisted by boys’ head coach Derek Meyer, and Josh Scharnberg.  She sees Alexandria as the top team in Section 8AA and in the Central Lakes Conference.
