Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 traveled to Clark, South Dakota for a weekend tournament.  Thursday’s first round games were rained out and the tournament was pushed back a day.  Post 30 opened pool play with a 6-2 win over LaMoure, North Dakota on Friday.

Carter Thielke (7IP, 2H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 13K) threw his best game of the season as recorded a complete game victory.

Leading hitters were Carston Fronning (2-2, 2B, RBI), Andrew Johnson (2-2, RBI) and Ethan Gronwold (2-3, 2RBI).

Fergus Falls scored first in the bottom of the second inning with Fronning hitting a sharp single to left and Johnson and Gronwold following suit with two clutch singles to score Fronning with 2 outs.

Post 30 added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  Colin Becker led off the 4th with a double and scored on a single by Johnson.  Bo Bring led off the 5th with a walk and came around to score by stealing second base, advancing to third on a bunt and scoring on a wild pitch.

LaMoure got both of their runs in the top of the sixth inning off a walk, a single and an error.  Thielke buckled down and kept the score at 3-2.  Post 30 then added 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth via 3 hits and 2 walks.

“Today was a great way to start the tournament off on the right foot,” noted Head Coach Trevor Larson of Fergus Falls.  “Carter threw his best game of his Legion career, striking out 13, and always being in control of his pitches and also his emotions.  Carter worked ahead of hitters and his location was spot on.  Our team fed off Carter today and played with great confidence and energy.  Our bats weren’t great, but we had some timely hits to spark the offense.”

Post 30 continues pool play on Saturday at 11:00am against Milbank, South Dakota.
