Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 traveled to Brainerd to play a new district opponent and wound up the trip by recording a pair of wins, 8-4 and 11-5.  Post 30 played great defense again and the bats came alive, allowing them to pick up the sweep on the road.

Owen Krueger (6.2IP, 8H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 4K) started on the mound in game one and was fantastic.  Carter Thielke came on in relief to pick up the save.  Leading hitters for Post 30 were Thielke (3-4, 2RBI), Krueger (2-3, 2B, 2RBI) and Colin Becker (1-3, 2RBI).

Post 30 struck in the top of the first for one run.  After the first two outs of the inning, Thielke singled sharply and Krueger followed it up with a double to score Thielke.  Brainerd answered in their half of the first with two hits to tie the score at 1-1.  The game remained tied until the fourth when Post 30 pushed across three runs. They added 2 more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.  Brainerd stated a threat in the seventh, but couldn’t get the big hit they needed.

“Sully (Krueger) was great today on the mound, working ahead in the count and getting great plays from his defense,” noted Head Coach Trevor Larson of Fergus Falls.  “Carter made several highlight plays to lead Post 30 in the field.  You can see Sully is getting more and more comfortable on the mound.  He is, for sure going to be a guy we are going to lean on down the stretch.”

Thielke (6IP, 3H, 2R, 0ER, 1BB, 8K) was on the mound in game two and was on his game, picking up the win.  Becker finished off the game, pitching the seventh inning.  Ethan Gronwold, Will Gronwold and Isaac Johnson all went 2-for-4 at the plate with each driving in a run.  Thielke was 3-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in.

Brainerd got on the board first with a walk and a double scoring the first run of the game.  Post 30 took a 2-1 lead on a two-out single by Will Gronwold.  Fergus Falls broke the game wide open with 7 runs in the fourth inning, with Thielke capping the inning with a 3-run shot to left field to make it 11-2.

“Today we played with great energy and had two seniors go out and be leaders on the mound,” reported Coach Larson.  “It was fun to see all our starters record a hit in the second game.  Very proud of all the boys, the way they showed up and competed all game long.  I want to thank the Legion for continuing to be great sponsors of Legion Baseball in our town.  We wouldn’t be able to play the great game that we all love, without them.”

Post 30 will be off until next Wednesday when another district rival, Detroit Lakes, comes to town for a double header at Legion Field.
