Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 opened their home season against a very good Casselton Haymakers team on Wednesday night at American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park.  Fergus Falls took a 6-5 win in the first game, but lost game two, 5-0.

Ben Swanson (7IP, 7H, 5R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K) started on the mound in game one and threw the ball extremely well on the way to a complete game victory.  Leading hitters for Post 30 were Owen Krueger (3-4, HR, 3RBI), Isaac Johnson (2-4), Carston Fronning (2-4) and Leighton Buckmeier (1-3, 2RBI).

Casselton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning with Post 30 committing two fielding errors.  Post 30 answered in the bottom of the second with Leighton Buckmeier coming up clutch with a two-out, two-run single to right field to make the score 3-2.  Casselton took a 5-4 lead in the top half of the sixth via one walk and two hits.  Post 30 started their comeback in the bottom of the seventh with Swanson reaching base, Isaac Johnson singling sharply to center, and Fronning laying down a fantastic bunt for a hit down the third base line to load the bases.  Post 30 tied the game on a sacrifice fly and after a pop out the stage was set for Owen Krueger who delivered a walk-off single.

In the second game, Colin Becker (4IP, 7H, 5R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K) went the first four innings and Isaac Johnson threw a scoreless fifth in relief.  Becker was the only player to register a hit for Post 30 in game two.

Casselton jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning with a pair of doubles and a Post 30 error.

“Post 30 struggled with the bats in game two,” commented Head Coach Trevor Larson.  “Give Casselton’s pitcher credit, he threw strikes early and kept guys off balance.  We need to do a better job of picking up breaking balls out of pitcher’s hands.  Today was a fun day at the ballpark, it’s always nice to play at home.  The boys battled hard today despite not having our sharpest defense.  Swanny does such a good job of not letting circumstances get to him.  He stayed composed and really picked up our defense with many opportunities to make plays behind him.  His change-up was straight up filthy today and he had guys off balance all game long.  Owen also had a heck of a game for us today.  A two-run home run tied the score in the fourth.  For Owen to come up clutch for us in the bottom of the seventh just put the icing on the cake.”

Post 30 plays to District games on Thursday in Perham.
