Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 opened up their season on Friday in Wahpeton playing two games in pool play.  Post 30 beat Billings, Montana 12-11 and defeated Big Stone, South Dakota 9-1.  A third pool play game will be played on Saturday.

Ben Swanson (4IP, 10H, 8R, 6ER, 1BB, 4K) started on the bump in game one and was relieved by Evan Lindgren (1.1IP, 1H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) and Riston Albert (1.2IP, 0H, 0R, 3BB, 5K).  Albert picked up the victory on the mound.

Carter Thielke (2-3, 2RBI) and Ethan Gronwold (3-4, GW RBI) led the offense for Post 30.

Billings jumped out to a 2-0 lead after their top half of the first.  Post 30 answered back with a two spot of their own.  Between innings 2 and 5 there were 3 lead changes as both teams struggled to get off the field defensively.  Billings took an 11-10 lead into the bottom of the sixth.  Post 30 tied it in the sixth and had an opportunity to win the game in the seventh.  Isaac Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh with a sharp single to right to start the rally.  Andrew Johnson followed suit with a sharp single to left to put runners on first and second.  After a strikeout and a walk to load the bases, Ethan Gronwold hit a walk-off single to right field to win the game 12-11.

Colin Becker (5IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 8K) started on the mound in game two and threw the ball very well, going the distance and earning the win.  Leaders at the plate were Will Gronwold (2-3, 2RBI) and Andrew Johnson (1-2, 2B, 2RBI).

“We knew with two more games this weekend that we needed a good start form Colin after going through a few pitchers in game one,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Trevor Larson.  “Colin stepped up big time with his complete game.  He was in control from the get go, throwing strike one and staying ahead of hitters.  Our defense played well in game two, turning in some nice plays on top of the routine ones.  Today was not perfect, but we learned our lesson in a game we won instead of lost!  Give our guys credit as we played with energy and resilience all day long.  I also want to take the time to thank our Post 30 Legion in town who go above and beyond sponsoring our team.  It is always a privilege to represent the great people from out Legion and also all Veterans.  We thank them for their continued support.”

Fergus Falls Post 30 will wrap up pool play tomorrow at 6:00pm versus Wahpeton.

Post 30 is coached by Trevor Larson, Tosten Mann and Brock Kotschevar.
