The Ashby baseball team experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat on Thursday in the Section 6A Tournament.  The Arrows seized a 4-3 victory in dramatic walk-off fashion in their 4-3 win over Brandon-Evansville in their first game of the day and then fell behind early in a 15-3 loss to New York Mills.  Ashby will play an elimination game against Upsala/Swanville at 2:30pm Tuesday at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood.  New York Mills faces Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in a battle of unbeaten number one seeds at 4:30pm Tuesday in Glenwood.

The Arrows and Chargers were tied at three when Carter Spangler singled in Torin Olson who reached base to start the bottom of the seventh when he was hit by a pitch.  He then stole second base to move into scoring position, setting the stage for Spangler’s game winner.  Spangler went 2-for-3 at the plate and also started things off on the mound for Ashby, going five innings, allowing 5 hits and three runs, while striking out three.  Evan Paulson got the win with two solid innings of relief, fanning four straight batters.  Brady Perleberg (6IP, 5H, 4R, 7K) pitched well for the Chargers.  Jayden Hoidahl (2-2, BB, SB) and Perleberg (2-3, 2B, HBP, R) led the attack for B-E.  Tyler Bitzan (1-3, 2RBI, R, SAC BUNT) also contributed at the plate.

New York Mills scored on a pair of bases loaded walks and a 2-run single by Monte Briard (2-3, 3RBI) in the first inning to take a 4-1 lead.  They added a pair of second inning runs on a two-run triple by Body Roberts (2-2, 3B, HR, 5RBI, 2R, BB), added two on a two-run double by Jonah Johnson (3-3, 2B, BB, 3RBI, 3R) in the third and broke the game open with a 7-run fourth, highlighted by a 3-run home run by Roberts.  Ashby was led by Olson (1-2, BB, 2R) and Carson Spangler (2-2, BB, 2RBI).

“We had a hard time finding the zone in a very small zone,” said Ashby Head Coach Jared Larson.  “Walks will kill you against a team like that.”
