The Alexandria Cardinals boys’ tennis season came to an end on Friday night in St. Cloud, against the Becker Bulldogs. After losing 6-1 earlier in the season, the Cardinals made a small adjustment, hoping to find an advantage that did not materialize. Although set-scores were closer, the final result stayed the same, with the Cardinals losing 6-1.
Blake Svee had the difficult job of moving into singles, which he handled with great character, but was the first to fall 6-1, 6-0. Owen Godfrey was off next, losing 6-4, then 6-1. Second doubles battled through close games, but were the third team to lose, by a score of 6-3, 6-0. With four matches left, Alexandria needed all of them to win. The third doubles team of Nik Cook and Ryker Bosek gave Alexandria a sign of life, winning in three sets, after dropping the first set, but that momentum did not last long. Brennan Lattimer was up 4-3 in the second set, before his opponent went on a three game run to close-out the set 6-4, and clinch Becker's fourth team point. Shortly after, Pieter Mulder and Owen Gilbertson dropped their match in a close (7-5) second set. Cole Haabala was the last on at first singles. He lost his match in a third set super tie-breaker. The Alexandria Cardinals had opportunities at a few spots, but Becker's depth at all seven spots proved to be too much.
Alexandria hosts individuals Tuesday with the unseeded round beginning at 10:00am. Cole Haabala and Blake Svee are competing in the singles tournament. Pieter Mulder/Owen Gilbertson and Ryan Meuwissen/Brennan Lattimer are competing in the doubles tournament.
