Riverland Earns Sweep of Spartan Baseball Team

The M State baseball team lost a pair of road games in Austin on Thursday as Riverland recorded wins of 17-7 and 12-7, running the Spartans losing streak to six games and putting their season record at 5-11.  M State is scheduled to play another road double header on Saturday afternoon against St. Cloud Technical and Community College.

Leading hitters for M State in the opener were Cal Schmitz (2-3, RBI, R), Daniel Buendorf (1-2, HR, 2RBI, R) and Mike Short (1-3, HR, 2RBI, R).  The winning pitcher for Riverland was Jack Jellinger (4IP, 7R, 8H, 6K).  M State led 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Blue Devils finished strong to get the win.

In the second game, Ty Kargar (4IP, 4H, R, 0ER, 4K) was solid on the mound.  Christian Norby (2-5, 2RBI, R), Mike Short (2-3, RBI, 2R), Cal Schmitz (1-3, 3R) and Dylan Gertken (2-4, 2RBI) led the way at the plate for M State.  Jake Tasker (5.1IP, 8H, 5R, 8K) was the winning pitcher for Riverland.  Jared Grams went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Blue Devils.  Riverland used an 8 run second inning to build a big lead which the Spartans could not overcome.
