Kraig Hunter begins his sixteenth year as Head Coach of the West Central Area boys’ golf team.  The Knights have a tough act to follow after claiming their Section title a year ago and placing fifth in the Class A State Tournament.  They lost two All-Conference players, Grant Beuckens and Tate Christenson to graduation, but return four All-Conference players from that team.

“Last season was the best season in our school history as we won every meet we played in through the regular season and Sections, and we took fifth place at the state tournament,” noted Coach Hunter.  “All six of our golfers made the All-Conference team.  Mitch Dewey and Payton Hanson will serve as our team captains this season.  Dewey, as a sophomore, was our low scorer last year and took fourth place individually at the Section meet.  Hanson, a junior, was also a consistent solid scorer and will be someone we count on a lot this year as well.  We also return 8th-grader Marshall Dewey and freshman Sam Hanson who despite being young last year, both made the All-Conference team, and they play a lot of golf in the off season.”

Senior Devin Benson and juniors Brett Amundson and Blake Flint will be expected to make varsity contributions this spring.

“Devin is a senior who was our alternate last year and Amundson and Flint are newcomers to the varsity,” reported Hunter.  “We look to them as the leading prospects to fill out our 6-man roster.  This year we moved up to Class AA and will be competing in Section 3AA where Marshall, New London-Spicer and Minnewaska Area were all powerhouses last year.  We will also be parts of two conferences, the West Central and the Quad County.  We have a lot of numbers in our program again this year.”

Ben Johnson will serve as junior high coach.
