Spartans Open Home Season with Double Header Loss to Central Lakes

The M State baseball team played their first two home games of the season on Monday in Fergus Falls, losing 7-6 in 8 innings in game one and dropping game two of their double header with Central Lakes, 14-4.

In the first game Central Lakes took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer from Eli Roberts.  M State tied the game with 4 runs in the bottom of the third when Cal Schmitz doubled home Noah Aufdengar and Mike Short followed with a 3-run home run.

Roberts game the Raiders a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a Kyle Baker double in the sixth brought home Adam Braun for a 6-4 Central Lakes lead.

Schmitz singled home Max Brommeric and Short delivered an RBI single to score Dylan Gertken as M State forced an extra inning by tying the game at 6-6.

The winning run crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh.

The Spartans collected 11 hits in the game with Schmitz, Short, Aufdengar and Gertken picking up two hits apiece.

Central Lakes banged out 20 hits in the second game and broke open a 6-4 game by scoring a single run in the fifth, five in the sixth and two more in the seventh.  Catcher Gunnar Wicklund went 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, two runs batted in and one run scored.  Baker had a double and a triple in four at bats, knocking in four runs and scoring once.  Rylee Rauch was 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.

The Spartans were led by Schmitz (2-4, RBI, SB).  Christian Norby, Jackson Martin and Daniel Buendorf each contributed an RBI.  M State had a total of 8 hits in the game and stranded 10 base runners.

M State (5-9) will travel to Austin on Tuesday for a double header with Riverland beginning at 4:00pm.  Their next home games are on Friday against St. Cloud Technical and Community College.
