Fergus Falls hosted the Otter Girls Track and Field Invitational on Monday with Willmar winning the event with 139 points.  Second place went to Detroit Lakes with 107 and Bemidji was third with 102.  They were followed by Perham 91, Minnewaska Area 69, Fergus Flals 28 and Pelican Rapids 22.

“We feel so fortunate to have dodged this crazy Spring weather to get an outdoor meet in,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Niki Welde.  “Bemidji said they were thankful as they have substantial amounts of snow on their track.  They are not the only ones.  Cold temps and precipitation have forced teams all over the state to cancel last week's first outdoor meets, and put this week's meets in jeopardy.  Today was a small window in a bleak Spring for weather.   Next week already has us concerned.”

Welde continued, “That being said.  Hooray for today!!!  Our athletes competed on the full outdoor track for the first time this season.  We had great competition and good weather.  For many of our young team this was their first experience in a full outdoor meet.  They performed well.  We are looking at this day as a great opportunity to compete, but to also get out and experience their events outdoors on something other than a short indoor track with limited events.  Our sprint relays are coming together.  We have a great combo of veterans and new sprinters to draw from.  We learned a lot tonight from watching them compete. Our Distance team is working hard to cover a lot of events.  They are all dedicated in their work ethic and support and push each other.”

Ainsley Hansen winning the high jump was a highlight.  We had some cold and rainy weather on us during the girls’ portion.  She was able to stay prepared and performed well.  She ended up third in the long jump while juggling events with the high jump.  We cross our fingers for next week on Tuesday in Rocori.  The forecast is not great, but we will see.
