The Ashby/Brandon-Evansville track and field teams graduated a good amount of talent from the boys’ team that won the 2021 Pheasant Conference championship, however, the girls’ runner-up team lost only one senior to graduation, so they return a solid nucleus for 2022.

Co-Head Coaches Zach Traphagen and Robert Bosma will be assisted by Adam Wagner and Shellee Hansen.

The boys’ return seniors Derick Novotny (Sprints/Pole Vault) and Wesley Siira (Mid-Distance), juniors Nathan Anderson (Sprints/ Hurdles/ Long Jump), Logan Froemming (Mid-Distance/Hurdles/Triple Jump, Pole Vault), and Dierk Goeden (Sprints, Long Jump, Pole Vault), sophomores Micah Fossell (Distance/Mid-Distance) and Cohen Reiland (Sprints/Mid-Distance), freshmen Micah Fuller (Sprints/Hurdles/High Jump) and Donell Lee (Mid-Distance/Distance/High Jump), and eighth-graders Kenneth Spielman (Distance/Mid-Distance) and Kaleb Fuglseth (Distance/Mid-Distance).

Juniors Kian Gackle (Sprints/Mid-Distance/Long Jump/High Jump), Aaron Gillespie (Shotput/Discus) and Logan Haburn (Sprints/Long Jump) will also be counted on to fill varsity events this season.

Returning varsity contributors for the girls’ include Catherin Koefod (Sprints/Hurdles) and Katrina Buchholz (Shotput, Discus), juniors EmmaLee Brethorst (Sprints/Long Jump) and Gretchen Bredberg (Distance), sophomores Skylar Bitzan (Sprints/Long Jump), Lucea Wales (Sprints/Mid-Distance/Triple Jump/ Pole Vault) and Ashley Paulson (Mid-Distance), and freshmen Courtney Brethorst (Mid-Distance/Long Jump) and Taylor Dingwall (Sprints/Hurdles/High Jump).

“The biggest strength that we see in this group of athletes is their positive attitude and willingness to be coached,” said Coach Traphagen.  “They are a very mature group, even though we lack the numbers in our senior and junior classes.  It will be very fun to watch these athletes grow and improve throughout the spring, especially if they can keep the great attitude and sense of urgency they have shown the first few weeks of practice.”
