West Central Area Head Track and Field Coach Dave Schleicher spent 11 years an assistant coach and was head coach in 2019 when both the boys’ and girls’ teams won Conference titles.  He is back in the Head Coaching role this spring and will be assisted by Nate Wood, Matt Nemak and Austin Hanson.

Team captains will be Lexi Bright on the girls’ side, and Shad Swanson and Tyler Stone on the boys’ side.  Bright qualified for sections in the 1600 meter run, 800 meter run and long jump last season, while Stone competed in the discus at Sections.

Taylor Bennett and Terina Blascyk both qualified for the Section meet in the 1600 meter run and Liz Rustan and Victoria Junker competed at state in the 4x400 meter relay.

Kaitlyn Hansen has been in the program for many seasons and is a strong leader for the lady Knights.

Newcomer and all-around athlete Anthony Sykora will contribute in the boys’ sprint events.

“We have a number of athletes on the verge of coming into their own this season,” noted Coach Schleicher.  “Strengths will be our distance and throwers led by Coach Hanson and Coach Nemak.  We will have a strong, young group of jumpers that will improve greatly with more time.”

The Knights are in a new conference this season having shifted to the West Central Conference.

“Many teams in this conference have solid and deep programs, but Morris and Minnewaska Area would be my top two as they have always had talented and strong programs to compete against, “ said Schleicher.  “We are lighter than past years on kids, but I really feel what we lack in number we make up for in talent and character.  “We have a great group of athletes that are had working and dedicated to getting better, so that makes our jobs easier.  There are quite a few younger athletes that are just learning their events and could really surprise some folks by seasons end.”
