M State Baseball Team Splits Sunday Double Header with Vermilion

Minnesota State split a Sunday double header with Vermilion Community College  on Sunday, winning the opener 7-3 and falling 7-5 in the nightcap.

The Spartans put four runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning of game one to overcome a 3-2 deficit on the way to the win.  They finished with 8 hits in the game, led by Ty Kargar (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2R, BB), Jackson Martin (2-4, 2B, RBI, R) and Dylan Gertken (2-3, BB, SB).  Daniel Buendorf added a 3-run homer in the four-run fifth.

Winning pitcher Wyatt Halvorson went 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, one earned run, striking out six and walking three as he improved his record to 2-0 on the season.  Mike Short struck out 3 batters in two innings of hitless relief.

Vermilion was led at the plate by Cameron Peterson (2-4, 3B, RBI) and Graham Porter (2-4).  Zach Cheney added a double in three at bats.

The Ironmen were the visitors in game two and they broke a 3-3 tie with a four-run sixth inning and then held off a rally in the bottom of the seventh to record the 7-5 win.  Dillon Eden was the winning pitcher for Vermilion, allowing just one hit over 4-and-a-third innings, striking out ten batters.  Peterson and Cheney each had two hits for Vermilion.

Hitting leaders for the Spartans were Ty Kargar (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Christian Norby (1-4, 2B).

M State will play two games Tuesday at Carleton College, beginning at 2:30pm.
