M State Baseball Coach Grant Harding has a large group of freshmen on his 2022 roster and some key returning sophomores to lead the Spartans into the MCAC schedule.  Harding’s team was 17-22 a year ago, finishing 5-7 in conference play.  They finished in the top six teams in the state.

Sophomore Will Hoerneman is their top returning pitcher.  As a freshman, Hoerneman went 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA, striking out 38 batters in 49.2 innings.

Christian Norby, a sophomore outfielder, had a slash line of .340/.443/.681 last season, with 8 doubles, 8 home runs, 28 runs batted in and 21 runs scored.

Norby, Wyatt Halvorson (P/OF) and Isaiah Sykora (2B/OF) will serve as team captains this season.  Sykora hit .292 last season with a .378 on base percentage and a .319 slugging percentage.  He drove in 10 runs and scored 12 times.

Sophomore first year player, Mike Short (3B) had a good Florida trip with a double, 2 homers, 6 runs batted in and 7 runs scored in the Spartans first 6 games.

Freshman Brock Depute (P, UT) is expected to contribute on the mound.  In Florida he threw a complete game victory, striking out 7 batters and walking none in his seven innings.  He scattered 10 hits and gave up 4 earned runs in the outing.

“We played well in Florida,” stated Coach Harding.  “We really seem to be able to put up runs offensively.  The key to the season will be our pitching.”

Harding says St. Cloud Community and Technical College seems to have another good team and is probably the team to beat in the MCAC.

Ty Kargar (P/OF), Liam Kaminski (P/1B) and Daniel Buendorf (IF/P) are the other sophomores on the roster.

Other freshmen in the battle for playing time include Brett Engelmeyer (P/UT), Cal Schmitz (C/2B), Dylan Gertken (SS), Aaron Yund (C), Noah Aufdengarten (P/OF), Max Brommerich (UT), Jack Ramthun (P/1B), Jayden Guthrie (P) and Jackson Martin (P/1B).
