The M State Spartans opened the baseball season on Sunday in Davenport, Florida, beating SUNY Adirondack 13-10 in the first game of their double header and falling 5-3 in the nightcap.

Wyatt Halvorson was the winning pitcher in game one.  Halvorson lasted six-and-a-third innings, allowing eight hits and eight runs while striking out five.  Brett Engelmeyer threw two-thirds of an inning relief out of the bullpen.

The Spartans racked up nine hits on the day with Christian Norby and Jackson Martin collecting two hits each.  Norby had a home run in the fifth inning.

The Spartans got their offense going in the second inning when Martin tripled in a run.  In the top of the third M State tied the game 2-2 and they pulled away for good with six runs in the fifth inning, taking an 8-2 lead.  Norby homered on the first pitch of his at bat, scoring three runs.  Martin also delivered a two-run double and Daniel Buendorf singled in a run.

After SUNY Adirondack scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Spartans lead to 9-5, the Spartans tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 13-5.  SUNY recorded a five-run seventh to put the final at 13-10.

Martin (2-2, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) and Norby (2-4, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) led the offensive attack for the Spartans.  Cal Schmitz knocked in a pair of runs and Dylan Gertken reached base four times with a single and 3 walks, scoring 3 runs.  Max Brommerich had a double and scored twice.

Will Hoerneman (6.2IP, 8H, 5R, 4K) took the loss for M State in game two.  The game was tied at 3-3 with SUNY Adirondack batting in the top of the seventh.  A two-run single by Justin Nesbitt broke the tie and led the Timberwolves to the victory.

Bryce Emery (7IP, 5H, 3R, 9K) got the win for SUNY.
Mike Short (3-4, 2R, 2 RBI, HR) led the Spartans with 3 hits in 4 at bats, including a home run.  The Spartans played errorless ball in the field.

The Timberwolves also played flawlessly in the field.

The Spartans will play two games against Prairie State College on Monday in Auburndale, Florida.  They also have a double header scheduled for Wednesday against Oakton Community College, also in Auburndale.
