The Hancock Owls and Ashby Arrows had a back-and-forth battle in Glenwood on Saturday afternoon with the Owls holding off the Arrows down the stretch for a 53-50 victory.

Hancock led 10-7 early in the game when Ashby went on a 14-0 run to establish a 21-10 lead eight minutes into the game.  With 9:45 left in the first half Jacob Cook picked up his third foul and went to the bench, where he spent the rest of the half as Hancock cut the lead to four, 31-27 at halftime.  The Arrows turned the ball over with under four seconds to go, trailing 51-50, and then put Matt Thompson on the line where he buried a pair of free throws to give the Owls a 3 point lead.  Thompson finished 6-for-6 on the line and had a game high 27 points and 9 rebounds.  He was joined in double figures by Hudson VerSteeg with 14 points, including four 3's.  Zachary Koehl distributed a team high 6 assists.

Cook led Ashby with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.  Torin Olson added 12 and Brodie Ecker had 11 points and a pair of assists.  Hunter Norby only had 4 points, but led the team with 5 assists and 8 rebounds.  Norby fouled out late in the game.

The Arrows shot 49% (21/43) overall from the field and secured 22 rebounds.

"We had good efforts off the bench from Sam Sorenson and Matson Hoff," said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  "Their contributions became vital when several of our players missed a significant number of possessions because of fouls and injury."

"It marked the final basketball game in the careers of our ten seniors," continued Holsten.  "Carson Spangler, Hunter Norby, Torin Olson, Jacob Cook, Carter Spangler, Jackson Finkelson, Matson Hoff, Sam Sorenson, Sam Heeter, and Evan Paulson have been terrific role models and leaders at Ashby High School.  Their leadership and talents will be difficult for future classes to duplicate."

Hancock (23-5) will advance to face Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa for the Section 6A South Sub-Section title on Tuesday night at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood.

Ashby finishes their season with a record of 23-4.
