Fergus Falls scored the last 8 points of the first half to take a 32-23 halftime lead and then went on a 7-0 run to start the second half to increase their lead to 16 points on the way to a solid 65-50 win over the Crookston Pirates on Wednesday night in the Section 8AA semifinals at Detroit Lakes.  The win puts the Otters into the championship game at 7:00pm Friday against Menahga.  The Braves recorded a 70-49 victory over Perham in the other semifinal contest.

“I thought we really played great team ‘D’ tonight,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Josh Steer.  “Crookston shot the ball really well early on and were able to weather that storm to start the game.  The end of the first half and beginning of the second half really established some good momentum that we were able to carry through the rest of the game.”

Ellie Colbeck had a game high 22 points, making 8-of-9 free throws and in the process became the all-time Fergus Falls girls’ basketball scoring leader, passing Hannah Draxten’s mark of 2,364 points.  Colbeck was joined in double figures by Tori Ratz who hit three 3’s on her way to 16 points.  Ainsley Hansen added 9 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot.  Colbeck also had a pair of blocked shots and distributed 7 assists.  Hannah Polejewski and Cyntreya Lockett each chipped in with 5 rebounds and Ratz added 3 assists.  The Otters shot 18-of-20 from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle 20-13.

Crookston had three players in double figures, led by Halle Winjum with 16, including four 3-pointers.  Abby Borowicz and Hayden Winjum each had 10 points.  Crookston shot only two free throws and made them both.  The Pirates also had 10 3’s on the night, five in each half.

The win was the ninth in a row for the Otters and their fifteenth in their last sixteen games. Fergus Falls (23-5) and Menahga (26-2) will square off at 7:00pm Friday night in DL.
