Top-seeded Montevideo held off a determined second half effort by West Central Area on Tuesday night as the Thunder Hawks won a tightly contested defensive battle with the Knights, 39-37 in a Section 3AA girls’ basketball playoff game in Willmar.

“Every last game is a tough one, but it is especially tough when the girls battled back and had a chance at the end of the game with 3.7 seconds left in the game from a BOB Set,” said West Central Area Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. “I went with a new concept, one we didn't practice before, and it didn't pay off. I should have gone with my gut and called something we were comfortable with and said come and stop it to the Thunder Hawks. At the end of the day I was happy our team went for the win in the second half and created pressure. We had some great shots but they didn't fall tonight. If you told Montevideo that they would hold us to 37 points they would have thought they won by 20 plus, and that's a credit to our defense to continually keep us in the game. These girls will never know how much we appreciated the effort they gave, and how PROUD I am of their persistence to be better.”

Leaders for the Knights were Lexi Bright (12 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 deflections), Macy Grosz (8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) and Claire Stark (8 points, 4 rebounds).  Addison Staples added 4 points, 2 rebounds, 3 deflections and 2 steals, Jayden Styba contributed 6 rebounds and Elizabeth Rustan chipped in with 4 boards.

West Central Area finishes the season with an 18-6 record.
