The Alexandria Cardinals wrapped up their final regular season boys’ hockey game Thursday night against the Brainerd Warriors in a 2 – 2 Tie.

Senior and goal scoring leader Brycen Berg got the Cardinals on the board last in the first period after the puck deflected off a Brainerd defender which put Berg on a mini break away. Berg beat the Warrior goaltender on the glove side.

The Cardinals found themselves in penalty trouble in the 2nd period which allowed Brainerd to get a power play goal to tie the game at 1 apiece. Five minutes later junior forward Joe Lamski tipped a point shot from Sophomore Gage Castle to put the Cardinals back on top. Sophomore Leo Kompelien got the play started when he passed the puck to Castle who found Lamski in front of the net.

With only 2:34 remaining in the game, the Warriors were able to tie the game after the puck deflected off a Cardinal defender, bounced up into the air and ended up in the net. The two teams would skate through a scoreless 8 minute overtime session to conclude the tie. Alexandria controlled the play in the overtime session, outshooting Brainerd 6-1 in those 8 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.

Senior Teegan Pfeffer made the start for the Cardinals with 19 saves on 21 shots. Alexandria was only able to score twice on 36 shots in the contest.

The Cardinals, who were voted the #1 seed in Section 6A will kick-start the section playoffs on Tuesday taking on the #8 seed Breckenridge/Wahpeton. Game starts at 7:00 PM at the Runestone Community Center.
