Pelican Rapids and Hawley squared off in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference boys’ basketball battle on Thursday night in Hawley and the visiting Vikings took a 74-65 victory from the Nuggets.

“This was another big conference road win for our group this week,” stated Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud.  “We played a good stretch of basketball midway through the second half to build a fifteen point lead that was enough for us to hang on for the win in the last few minutes.”

Timmy Guler poured in 23 points to lead the Vikings, while Ian Fahje added 18 and Hunter Williams chipped in with 10.

Sam Senske and Hayden Grani led Hawley with 19 and 17 points, respectively.  Brevin Stoa was also in double digits with 10 points.  Mason Gratton and Brady Gratton chipped in with 8 apiece.

“Tonight the cliché about basketball being a game of runs came true,” noted Hawley Head Coach Nathan Stoa. “We were able to head into halftime only down by 2, but just gave up one too many runs in the second half. We were able to make some nice plays on both ends of the floor, and made a nice push sparked by Hayden Grani, it just wasn’t quite enough to put us in reach at the end.”

Pelican Rapids (16-5, 8-1 HOL) has a home game with Barnesville on Tuesday.

Hawley (13-5, 5-4 HOL) will host Frazee on Saturday afternoon at 4:30.
