Early Third Period Goals Lead Bemidji to 5-3 Win Over Otter Boys

The Bemidji Lumberjacks broke a 3-3 tie with a goal 48 seconds into the third period and then added an insurance goal at 1:09 of the third as they held that lead throughout the rest of the game and recorded a 5-3 road win over the Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team on Saturday afternoon.

Bemidji got off to an early 2-0 lead as Colten Pickett scored at 6:51 of the opening period with assists from Caden Voge and Wylee Gladen.  A power play goal by Cael Knutson at 13:47 was setup by Voge and Noah Mannausau and the Lumberjacks led 2-0.  Kellen Stenstrom notched the first Fergus Falls goal at 15:41 with Andrew Johnson and Michael DeBrito earning assists.  Bemidji took a 2-1 lead into the second period.

Goals by Leighton Buckmeier, assisted by Stenstrom at 1:42, and Cole Zierden, from Andrew Johnson and Isaac Johnson at 12:12, put the Otters in front 3-2.  Cael Knutson’s second power play goal of the game at 14:15 knotted the score at 3-3.  Voge earned his third assist of the day and Mannausau recorded his second helper of the game.

The third period goals came from Wyatt Mattfield, assisted by Mannausau who joined Voge with a playmaker (3 assists), and Wylee Gladen, and an unassisted tally by Nicholas Yavarow.

Fergus Falls put 28 shots on the Bemidji net, with Brayden Puppe stopping 25 of them.

Ben Swanson made 25 saves on the 30 shots he faced in the Fergus Falls goal.

Fergus Falls (14-7) will host River Lakes on Tuesday and Alexandria on Thursday with the game against the Cardinals determining the top seed in the Section 6A playoffs.
