The Alexandria boys’ hockey team took a 5-1 lead after two periods and then weathered a third period comeback effort by Duluth Denfeld, holding on for a 6-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.  The Cardinals put 43 shots on goal compared to 26 for Denfeld.

Mason Stennes got Alexandria on the board at 5:06 of the opening period with an assist from Peter Mulder.  The Cardinals made it 2-0 at 8:12 when Brycen Berg scored from Tyler Kludt and Josiah Gronholz.  Denfeld cut the lead in half on a power play goal from Simon Davidson at 10:30 of the period.  The goal was assisted by John Bloomquist and Connor McClure.

Alexandria outshot Denfeld 16-8 in the middle period and scored three unanswered goals to open up a 5-1 lead.  Gronholz scored an unassisted goal at 6:47, Berg scored from Gage Castle at 7:37 and a Joe Lamski power play goal from Mulder at 15:25 closed out the second period scoring.

Denfeld managed to score the first two goals of the third to get the deficit to 5-3 as Davidson notched his second of the game from Connor McClure and Cooper McClure just 1:51 into the period, and Andy Larson netted an unassisted goal at 7:42.  Berg complete his hat trick at 12:07 with an unassisted tally to kick the Cardinals lead up to 6-3 and give them some breathing room.  The final goal of the game was scored by Connor McClure with an assist from Larson, putting the score at 6-4.

Alexandria goalie Teagan Pfeffer made 22 saves.

The Cardinals (13-5-1) will host St. Cloud on Tuesday and will play at Fergus Falls on Thursday in a game that will decide the top seed in the Section 6A playoffs.
