Golden Rams Battle Back from 13 Point Deficit to Defeat Lady Spartans

In a back-and-forth battle in Fergus Falls on Wednesday night the M State lady Spartans fell behind 11-2 to start their game against Anoka-Ramsey.  The Rams built a 14 point lead, but fell behind by 13 in the second half before closing the game strong with a 25-8 fourth quarter to record a 69-65 victory.

The lady Spartans trailed 30-16 with 2:12 left in the first quarter before closing out the half on a 12-0 run to cut the halftime lead to 30-28.  They took the lead when they scored the first four points of the second half and increased the lead to 44-34 as they finished an impressive 28-4 run.  Their 29-14 third quarter left them with a 57-44 lead after three quarters.

Jayna Gronewold scored 21 of her game high 31 points in the third quarter as she made all six of M State’s field goals in that quarter and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line.  She finished 11-of-13 on free throws.  Emily Dehler (13 points, 16 rebounds, 3 steals) and Lindsey Kurz (10 points, 16 rebounds) 5 blocks) both registered double-doubles in the game.  M State shot 30.6% (19-62) from the floor and made only 2-of-17 (11.8%) from beyond the arc.  They were 25-37 from the foul line and held a slim 47-45 edge on the boards.

Anoka-Ramsey was led by Hailey Babcock (19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), Sydney Kehr (16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks) and CeCe Bell (14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals.  Mikayla Kanenwisher finished with 4 assists and 4 steals to go along with 5 points and 5 rebounds.  The Golden Rams made 31% (8-26) of their 3’s and 32.5% (26-80) of their total field goals attempts.  They were also 9-of-13 (69%) on free throws.

Anoka-Ramsey improved to 13-5 overall and 4-4 against MCAC Southern Division teams.

The lady Spartans (8-11, 2-6 MCAC South) will travel to Austin on Saturday to face Riverland.  They will close out the home portion of their schedule with games against Minnesota West next Wednesday and Rochester on Saturday, February 12.
