The New York Mills boys’ basketball team recorded a pair of wins on their way to the championship of the Walker Holiday Tournament last week.  The Eagles opened play with a 65-40 win over Lake Park-Audubon on Wednesday and then beat the number one ranked QRF team in Class A, Cherry, 65-62 for the title on Thursday.

Against LPA Tate Olson registered a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds, while dishing out 7 assists and coming up with 5 steals.  Jonah Johnson had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, and Breck Hensch added 9 points.  Noah Noffsinger turned in a solid performance with 7 points, 5 assists and a pair of rebounds, and Jack Peeters finished with 4 points and 2 boards.

“LPA was very conservative and made us play defense all night, but our boys were up to the challenge,” stated New York Mills Head Coach Mike Baune.

In the win over Cherry, Olson (17 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists) again had a double-double.  He was joined in double figures by Peeters (16 points, 9 rebounds), Noffsinger (14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) and Johnson (10 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists).  Hensch contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.

“We had a huge game against Cherry,” reported Coach Baune.  “We knew they liked to play fast, as do we, but thought if we bottled them up in the half court and slowed the game down a bit it would be in our favor.  The boys made a big statement with intense defense for all 36 minutes and very balanced scoring to carry us to victory.”

New York Mills (8-0) came out of the tournament as the number two ranked QRF team in Class A.  They will host Bertha-Hewitt in their next game on Thursday night.
