Otter Boys Win in Goalie Ryan Nelson's First Varsity Start

Ryan Nelson stopped 23 of 27 shots as he made his first varsity start in goal in the Fergus Falls Otters 8-4 win over Kittson County Central on Wednesday.  The Otters put 45 shots on goal in the game.

The Otters scored 3 power play goals in the game.  Andrew Johnson recorded a playmaker with 3 assists and Cole Zierden had a hat trick.

Zierden got the scoring started 1:35 into the game with an assist from Kellen Stenstrom.  Zierden’s second goal came on the power play at 7:56 and was assisted by Michael DeBrito and Carter Thielke.  Kittson County Central got on the board at 9:21 when Tyler Hennen found the back of the net off assists from Izyk Strege and Landon Sugden.  Stenstrom made it 3-1 at 13:13 with an assist from Andrew Johnson.

Zierden completed his hat trick 3:12 into the second period, assisted by Andrew Johnson and Landon Thacker.  Strege scored for the Bearcats at 6:23, assisted by Hennen and Sugden, making it a 4-2 contest.  A power play goal at 10:12 by Stenstrom was setup by Andrew Johnson and Isaac Johnson and Kittson Central answered at 13:46 and 16:41 with two goals by Sugden.  Hennen assisted on the first goal and Hayden Olsonawski assisted on the second one, trimming the Otters lead to 5-4 at the end of two periods.

Isaac Johnson and Michael DeBrito tallied unassisted goals 1:20 apart in the third period and DeBrito’s power play goal at 16:35 was assisted by Isaac Johnson and Stenstrom.

Fergus Falls (9-2) will face Detroit Lakes at 4:00pm Thursday for the championship of the Holiday Hockey Classic.
