In the opening round of the Granite City Classic the Ashby Boys Varsity Basketball Team experienced their first loss of the season being defeated by the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers 64-49.  The Arrows trailed 37-28 at the halftime break.

Arrow senior forward Jacob Cook led all scorers in the contest with 31 points.  He had 23 of those points by halftime.  Hunter Norby added 8 points for the Arrows.  Sam Sorenson totaled 7 second half points after sitting out most of the first half with foul trouble.  Brodie Ecker made three free throws to complete the scoring.

The Panthers had three players reach double figures and were led by sophomore point guard Kayden Lee with 24 points.  Leroy and Dominic Fairbanks each scored 15 points.

“Our guys did a good job hanging in there,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “When we needed a stop, the Panthers made plays that kept us from getting any momentum.  They turned some of our missed shots into fast break layups.  The Panther guards, Lee and Fairbanks, play with the skill and savvy of seniors, not like the sophomores they are.  They make an impressive backcourt.”

The Arrows take on the North Woods Grizzlies in the final round of the Granite City Classic Thursday afternoon at 12:30 at St. John's University.

The Arrows overall record now stands at 4-1.
