Pirates Overcome 13 Point Deficit to Defeat Otter Girls 46-45

The Fergus Falls girls’ basketball team dropped another one point heartbreaker on Tuesday night as they let a 13 point second half lead slip away in a 46-45 loss to the Crookston Pirates in the opening round of the Country Inn and Suites Holiday Classic.

The two teams had a tough defensive struggle going on throughout the first half as the Pirates led 14-12 at the break.  The Otters picked up the offensive pace in the second half as they built a 36-23 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game, however, Crookston then finished the game strong, outscoring the Otters 23-9 the rest of the way.

The Pirates were led by sophomore guard Halle Winjum who scored 16 points, including six crucial points at crunch time.  Her layup with 30 second left gave Crookston a 44-43 lead and after the Otters regained the advantage at 45-44, she drove through the defense and scored another layup with sixteen seconds left to make it 46-45, Pirates.  A fifteen foot jumper by Ellie Colbeck clanged off the rim as time ran out on the Otters.

Colbeck paced the Otters with 14 points.  Hannah Polejewski and Tori Ratz finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively.  Ainsley Hansen added 6 points and was a monster on the boards, securing 15 rebounds, 9 of them coming on the offensive end.  Colbeck had a team high 5 assists and led the team with 3 steals.  Cyntreya Lockett had 7 rebounds on the night.

Emma Osborn joined Halle Winjum in double digits for Crookston, hitting three of the Pirates eighth 3-point field goals and making all four of their free throw attempts to finish with 13 points.

Fergus Falls (5-3) will play Breckenridge in the third place game at 5:30pm Wednesday, while Crookston (5-2) faces Watertown-Mayer for the tournament title at 2:00pm.  Watertown-Mayer defeated Breckenridge 58-45 on Tuesday in their first round matchup.
