Rainy River had a 45-34 advantage on the rebounding chart, placed five players in double digits and had only 3 turnovers on the day as they handed the M State Men’s Basketball team a 100-88 defeat at the Central Lakes Classic in Brainerd. The Voyageurs shot 44.2% (38-86) from the field and buried 13-of-15 free throws.
Rainy River was led by 19 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists from Quelyn Nelson. Faizon Francis had 15 points, Marvel Carter added 14 off the bench, Markel Carter chipped in with a dozen and Jacob Desangles contributed 10 points.
M State made 43% (27-63) of their field goal attempts and shot 32.5% (13-40) from beyond the arc. Tyler Loe had a team high 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-8 from 3-point land. Renell Edwards contributed 18 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals, Nic Pearson added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals, Brett Engelmeyer came off the bench to provide 13 points and Langston Davis finished with 10 points and 5 boards.
M State (5-6) will host the Fergus Falls Classic on Thursday, December 30 and Friday, December 31. The Spartans will play Itasca on Thursday and 7:30pm and Mesabi Range on Friday at 5:00pm.
