Lady Spartans Snap 3 Game Losing Streak with Win Over Itasca

The M State Women’s Basketball team made 50% of their shots on Friday as they defeated Itasca Community College 91-50 in their opening round game of the Central Lakes Classic in Brainerd.  Four members of the lady Spartans scored in double figures, led by Jayna Gronewold who made 11-of-16 field goal attempts on the way to a game high 23 points.  Jayna also had 6 assists and 4 rebounds.

Other double digit scorers were Lindsey Kurz with 18, Emily Dehler with 15 and Mackenzie Foss with 10.  Dehler completed a double-double by securing 14 rebounds and also came up with 3 steals.  Foss had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, Kurz grabbed 6 boards and had 3 steals, and Grace Lider contributed 5 assists and 2 steals.  Brooke Hovland had 4 assists and Abby Tysdal snared 7 rebounds.

M State took excellent care of the ball, committing only 7 turnovers.  Itasca had just 8 turnovers on the night.  The Vikings shot just 35% (22-63) from the field and the lady Spartans held a 44-31 advantage on the boards.

Leaders for Itasca were Haley Murray (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), Mya Roberts (12 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Caroline Cheney (10 points, 7 rebounds).

M State (4-4) will play Rainy River at noon on Saturday at Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd.

The win over Itasca snapped a 3 game losing streak by the lady Spartans.
