The Otter Nordic Ski season got underway on Tuesday at Detroit Mountain near Detroit Lakes.  The race was hosted by Moorhead High School with varsity teams competing in a two-person sprint relay, while the JV teams competed in a 3.6 K skate race.  “Fortunately they make snow at Detroit Mountain,” said Head Coach Joshua Scharnberg.

‘We had a handful of skiers for whom this was their first meet and their first time on skis due to the lack of snow,” continued Scharnberg.  “One of those skiers is senior Drake Habraken and I asked him what made him come out for a new sports in his senior year?  Drake responded, ‘All my friends are out for skiing.  Also, I felt like I was born onto skis.’ When asked how the day went he said, ‘After competing for the first time, I’ve discovered a new inner passion.’”

Freshman Jaden Miller, state cross country ski athlete, is also new to skiing.  He said, ‘My buddy Logan convinced me to come out for skiing.  This sport will condition me for the other sports like track and cross country.’ About the meet Jaden replied, ‘It was surprisingly good and I was happy with what I did.’”

Senior captain, Ella Mayer, commented about the day, "It was fun to see all the new kids racing. Overall, it was a really fun day and everyone enjoyed it. Specifically, we had a fun time cheering for Anders and David." Ella is referring to Senior captain, Anders Anthonisen-Brown and Sophomore, David Ronnevik. Competition wise, these two gents were the highlight of the day placing fourth overall in their two-person sprint relay. Fourth place is a tremendous achievement, especially when competing against worthy opponents such as Brainerd and Moorhead. In terms of the race, Anders commented humbly (humble is a wonderful trait of Anders), "Pretty much David stepped up and put in the work and has worked really hard." When pressed about his own performance, Anders said, "Once I got back in the swing of things and remembered how to pace myself it went pretty well." Pretty well indeed. Kassy Arntson is a new addition to the team this year as an assistant coach.  She is a middle school art teacher.  “She’s connecting well with the kids, and she is definitely a positive influence for our Nordic team,” noted Coach Scharnberg.  “About our race Kassy said ‘It was exciting to see our athletes on skis and racing so well, especially considering for most it was their first time on snow this season.’ When asked what influenced her decision to coach skiing, Kassy said, ‘I was curious about Nordic skiing that was the biggest factor.  I look forward to outdoor sport and getting to know the athletes better.’”
