The Fergus Falls VFW Post 612 Bantam A hockey team played four games at home over the weekend, coming off a weekend of traveling and closely contested games.  Litchfield/Dassel/Cokato faced the Otters twice, Monticello and Moorhead one time each during the busy weekend at the Community Ice Arena.

The weekend started with a late game on Friday against the Dragons of Litchfield/Dassel/Cokato (LDC).  The Otters started the game down a player due to injury.  They knew they needed to work together and stay positive. Four minutes into the period Adam Kennedy flung the puck toward the net and scored an unassisted goal.  The Otters were all fired up and continued to play with speed and enthusiasm.  Nearly halfway through the first period Kennedy passed the puck t Braden Albert who saw Henry Greenagel open.  Greenagel scored to give the Otters a 2-0 lead.  Less than a minute later the Dragons answered back and the first period ended with a 2-1 Fergus Falls lead.  Returning to the ice after the Zamboni break, the Otters continued to show their excitement for the game.  Just 55 seconds into the period Albert spotted Jack Welde who sent a sweet pass to Michael Schmidt who fired the puck past the goalie. Most of the period shoed great defense and goal keeping on both sides.  The Dragons were able to slip past the Otter defense and find the net just one time in the second period.  The Otters showed the Dragons that they wouldn’t back down as moments later they answered back with a goal from Welde, assisted by Cam Alt and Schmidt, leaving the score of the game at 4-2 after two periods.  The Dragons were able to get a quick one on the board at the beginning of the third period and their defense remained strong throughout the period as they held the Otters off the scoreboard while adding two more goals on the way to a 5-4 win over Fergus Falls.

Saturday morning LDC returned to the Fergus Falls Community Ice Arena and the Otters took the ice with revenge on their mind.  Just minutes into the first period the Otters were assessed two major penalties, leaving them only 3 players on the ice.  The Dragons took advantage of the Otters being shorthanded and were able to quickly take a 2-goal lead.  The Otters were not going to back down as Kile Beck slipped one past the Dragon goalie to give the home team momentum.  Minutes later Welde was able to tie the game as the first period ended 2-2.  Knowing it was anyone’s game at this time, both teams showed great defensive play.  The Otters were able to take a 4-3 lead by the end of the second period.  The goals were scored by Alt, with an assist from Beck and Aiden Schake, and an unassisted goal from Schmidt.  The Otters took the ice in the third period ready to defend their territory and fight for the win, unfortunately, the Dragons were able to sneak past the Otters and score two goals late in the third period.  With just a minute remaining in the game Albert was able to find the back of the net with assists from Alt and Welde to tie the game.  The game went to a five minute sudden death overtime which saw the Otters lost 6-5.

The Otters returned to the rink later on Saturday to take on the Monticello Moose.  Schmidt was able to get one on the board for the Otters with assists from Welde and Albert.  Unfortunately, the Otters were not able to get past the Moose defensemen most of the game.  They went in the third period down 3-1.  In the third the Otters were able to score one more goal as Welde was assisted by Schmidt and Brock Scheuerman.  The Otters fell to the Moose by the score of 7-2.

The final game of the weekend was the first District game of the year, against the Moorhead Spuds.  The Otters were able to quickly get one on the board after a fantastic shot from Schake and an assist to Kennedy.  The Otters were not able to answer back to the next four goals scored by Moorhead.  In the second period, Scheuerman and Welde assisted Alt on the only goal of the period, leaving Fergus Falls trailing 7-2.  Returning to the ice for the third period the Otters knew they had to hold the Spuds and play great defense.  They did so as the Spuds were not able to score in the third period.  Playing great defense for the Otters this weekend was Quinn Wynn-Sheldon.  The Otters, on the other hand, were able to get one more goal to end the game with a 7-3 loss.  The final goal came from Kennedy with assists credited to Schake and Schmidt.  The Otters showed strength in the net with Holden Stenstrom saving over 70 shots on the weekend.

The Otters are coached by Pete Gaustad, Michael Alt, Matt Koalska and Dustin Wynn.  The Otters thank the VFW for their continued support.
