The 2020-21 season was a season to remember for the New York Mills boys’ basketball team.  They ended the season in the top 5 in Class A QRF rankings, were Park Region Conference champions and played number one ranked Mahnomen-Waubun to a 3-point game on their home court in the Section 6A North Sub-Section championship game.  The Eagles had a 13 game winning streak during the season and Tate Olson reached 1,000 career points.  What do they do for an encore?

That’s the question facing Head Coach Mike Baune and Assistant Kyle Haberman.  Darren Gaudette and Isaiah Laudenbach are gone from last year’s team. “We’ll bring back a very top heavy, seasoned core of seniors that have been playing on varsity since their freshman year,” stated Baune.  “We’ll combine this experience with 3 additional seniors that will receive a ton of minutes and be very helpful in areas we struggled with last year, mainly 3-point shooting and rebounding.”

Olson (SR, Point Guard), Breck Hensch (SR, Guard), Jonah Johnson (SR, Forward) and Noah Noffsinger (SR, Forward) are returning letter winners.  Seniors Jack Peeters (Forward) and Bryan Bohn (Guard), and juniors Hunter Holti (Forward) and Braden Partlow (Guard) will also contribute on the varsity level.

“We will look to have a bigger rotation this year and have a crew of about 4-5 sophomores and juniors that will be competing for minutes and give our top guys more breaks this season as we continue to optimize our fast-paced style of play,” added Baune.

As for the competition, Baune sizes it up this way, “we will be in the mix for both the conference and section titles.  Henning and Wadena-Deer Creek will battle us in the conference and BBE, Henning and Breckenridge are the top contenders in Section 6A.”
