Josh Steer moves into the position of Head Coach this season, replacing veteran Brad Strand who has moved on to the Superintendent’s role at Breckenridge High School after leading the Otters for the past 9 years. Steer has served as Strand’s top assistant for several years and will be assisted by Jess Price (Varsity Assistant), Kendall Kohler (JV) and Matt Lemke (9th Grade).
The Otters are coming off an 18-4 season which saw them go undefeated at home. They also had a fifteen game winning streak during the season and ended up 12-2 in the Central Lakes Conference. Their season ended with a loss to Pelican Rapids in the 8AA championship game. Paige Pearson (UW-River Falls) and Anna Anderson were key players lost to graduation.
Seniors Ellie Colbeck (Point Guard), Tori Ratz (Shooting Guard), Hannah Polejewski (Center), Ainsley Hansen (Forward) and Ellia Soydara (Forward) form a solid nucleus of returners for the 2021-22 season.
Juniors Karley Braeger (Shooting Guard), Cyntreya Lockett (Forward), Jenna Carlson (Forward) and Aleah Keller (Guard) will be called upon to add depth to the roster.
“This is going to be a fun group to watch,” said Coach Steer. “They play hard for each other and have been playing together for a few years now. We will have great experience and leadership returning. They bring the effort and energy and it translates to fun basketball to watch. Our conference and section have some great teams with great coaching, so every night should make for an entertaining battle.”
Steer points to Hawley, Barnesville, Perham and Crookston as the top teams in 8AA, while Willmar, Alexandria, Brainerd and Sartell-St. Stephen are at the top of the Central Lakes Conference.
