Third-seeded New York Mills posted a 38-20 road win over number two seed, Pine River-Backus in the Section 6A semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

After Pine River-Backus scored on a 64 yard touchdown pass and succeeded with their two-point conversion pass, New York Mills responded with a pair of first quarter TD’s to take a 16-8 lead after one quarter.  Bren Salo scored on a 13 yard run and then hit Eathan Ruther with the two-point pass for the first TD, while Dane Niemi scored the second TD on a 2 yard run.  Salo connected with Jonah Johnson for the two-point conversion and a 16-8 lead for the eagles.

The two teams swapped rushing touchdowns in the second quarter with Salo scoring on a 4 yard scamper to put the halftime lead at 22-14.

A second Salo 4 yard TD run, followed by a Niemi two-point conversion run gave New York Mills a 30-14 lead after three quarters.

A 75 yard touchdown pass by Pine River-Backus cut the lead to 30-20, however, Johnson scored on a 31 yard run and Niemi was good on the two-point conversion run to put the final score at 38-20.

“We played a great game on Saturday, probably our best of the year,” stated New York Mills Head Coach Matt Radniecki.  “The defense played very well in stopping the run.  We gave up a couple of play on the pass but we were there and they just made the plays.  Pine River is a very good team and we were fortunate to beat them twice this year.  The offensive and defensive lines did an outstanding job of controlling the line of scrimmage for the most part.  I am very proud of this team and what they have done and we look forward to playing in the Fargodome on Friday at 5:30.  The team has been working hard and has reached a goal that it set earlier this year.  Breckenridge defeated a very good OTC team so we will have our hands full but we look forward to the opportunity that we have.  Thanks to our fans we had a big following and we hope to see you on Friday as well.”
