Spartan Football Team Falls to 3-3 with 28-8 Loss at Rochester

The M State football team traveled to Rochester on Saturday where they lost to the Yellowjackets by the score of 28-8.  The Spartans are now 3-3 on the season as they prepare to host Mesabi Range at 2:30pm Saturday in Fergus Falls.

 

Rochester got on the board in the first quarter when Stephen Lewis hauled in a 6 yard TD pass from Billy MaplesEthan Forthun booted the extra-point for a 7-0 lead.

A 4 yard run by Justin Lynn and a PAT kick by Forthun gave Rochester a 14-0 lead with 11:22 remaining in the first half.  Rochester increased their lead to 21-0 with just 27 seconds left in the half when Dylan Ingram ran the ball into the end zone from the one yard line and Forthun added the extra point kick.  M State scored with ten seconds left when Fred Brown scored on an 82 yard pass from Nate Hayden, making the halftime score 21-6, Rochester.

Early in the third quarter the Yellowjackets extended their lead to 28-6 with an 8 yard pass from Lynn to Myanza McCain and a PAT kick by Forthun.  The Spartans scored the final points of the day on a safety as Forthun kicked the ball out of his own end zone after a high punt snap.

Rochester had 352 yards of total offense compared to 247 for M State.  The Spartans total included a negative 61 yards rushing.  Hayden completed 20-of-33 passes for 308 yards, but lost 73 yards in rushing yardage, due to numerous sacks.  Brown was the leading receiver with142 yards on 6 catches.  Jonathan Griffin caught 4 balls for 76 yards.  Defensive leaders were Logan Burress (1 solo tackle, 13 assisted tackles, ½ sack), William Black (5 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles, 3 pass breakups), Cheo Trotter (1 solo tackle, 9 assisted tackles, ½ sack) and Matthew Croteau (1 solo tackle, 8 assisted tackles).
