Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Cross Country teams ran at Wheaton on Saturday morning in the Border West Invitational. “After running at Milaca last Saturday, this was a more relaxed meet,” stated Head Coach Robert Bosma. “Today was a cooler morning with rain. Some of the runners struggled with footing and slipped on the corners or hills. Even so, the team stepped up and performed well.”

Kenneth Spielman (10:48.80) and Hope Rovang (14:08.60) of A-B-E set the pace for the day by each winning the Junior High races, respectively. “The varsity was pumped to watch Kenneth take the lead from the start and it was Hope's first win of her career,” said Bosma.

Ashley Paulson (21:53.80) had a tough battle with Julia Schmidt (21:39.20) from Border West. “For most of the race it was tight and it came to a sprint at the end.  Tuyet Vybui (Vy) continues to improve every race and ran really well again today,” added Coach Bosma.

Border West Head Coach Brittany Erickson said, “We had a great day running in the rain!  It started to sprinkle when the varsity/jv girls race started.  We saw faster times overall at our home course, compared to the times at Yellow Medicine East earlier in the week.  Julia took the lead halfway through the first lap and pulled away from Ashley Paulson and never looked back.  Ava Klindworth and Aurora Johnson both ran personal bests at our home course as the girls captured first place at a team.”

“The rain started to really come down right before the boys race,” reported Coach Erickson of the Buccaneers.  “ABE edged us out for first place in the team competition.  We had Joe Arens place second overall and Zach Rikomoto almost ran another PR and finished as our number two runner.  Brayden Hormann ran a PR and shaved off almost 30 seconds from Granit Falls.  We recognized our parents and seniors before the races.  It was great to have a big crowd cheer us on at home.”

For the Ashby-Brandon-Evansville guys, Micah Fossell (18:29.60), finished in third place.  “Micah finally feels healthy and his time showed it today,” noted Bosma. “He's worked really hard to get back to 100% and it was fun to see that today. Unfortunately, Jayden Hoidahl (18:54.10, 4th) is now struggling with a hip injury that slowed him down. Logan Froemming (19:04.30, 5th) and Cohen Reiland (23:11.50) ran really hard today and both set PR's for the season (as well as Micah).
