Barnesville and Henning battled through five competitive sets of high school volleyball on Tuesday night on the Hornets home floor.  When the night was done the Trojans were able to go home with a 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15, 15-12) victory.

“Last night we had a great volleyball match up in Henning with the Hornets,” said Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “They are a great volleyball program and have some super hitters on their team. We were able to see them in action this past weekend at the Showcase tournament in the cities, so it was fun to see how we would match up with them in a contest. We started the night off strong in the first couple of sets with some tough plays on defense and serve receive. They went to their outside hitter often in the first couple sets and we really struggled getting a good clean touch up on our block. We had too many errors up at the net that took points away from us on defense. Moving into the 3rd set we made a couple key changes that really made a big impact to how we played the rest of the night. Our defense was able to better read that third ball that was coming our way and get an aggressive attack back the other direction. I was so impressed with how well we played after being down two sets to start. These girls played with great determination to not go home in 3 sets tonight. We had the momentum on our side after taking sets 3 and 4 moving into the 5th and final set. It was hot in the gym and the floor was getting slick! We had a stellar start to the 5th sets with an opening run of 10-5 before we ended up stuck on serve receive. In a matter of a few balls, it was tied and 10 and then Henning took the lead before we were able to side out. Battling point for point we had some huge plays up on the net from Emily Bredman who helped us take down the Hornets in 5 sets. Tonight was a fantastic night for some great volleyball action.”

Bredman finished with a team high 19 kills, along with a solo block and a block assist.  Other leaders for Barnesville were Anna Stanford (12 kills, 27/27 serving, 2 aces, 17 digs, 3 blocks), Katie Newell (44 set assists, 7 kills, 10 digs, 9/10 serving), Lexi Bolgrean (9 kills, 17 digs), Emily Smith (8 kills, 8 digs, 24/25 serving, 3 blocks), Sydney Strand (14 digs, 12/12 serving) and Kenzie Skogen (15 digs, 11/14 serving, 1 ace).

The Trojans travel to Perham Thursday night.

No Henning information was reported.
