The M State volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to record a 3-2 win over St. Cloud Community and Technical College on Wednesday night in Fergus Falls.  The Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-21 and 27-25 victories in the first two sets, but M State rallied to even the match with wins of 25-21 and 25-20 in the third and fourth sets.  In the fifth set, the lady Spartans broke a 5-5 tie with 4 straight points during the service run of April Schridde to build a 9-5 lead and went on to post a 15-12 win with Brooke Hovland closing out the match with her sixteenth kill of the night.

Anya Maack led the attack at the net with 19 kills and Alaina Anderson added 11.  Setter Avery Wanner distributed 49 set assists on the night.  Hovland, Maack and Anderson also had 4 solo blocks apiece.

Bailey Marty led the defensive effort with 52 digs and Emily Condon had 18 digs.  Wanner finished with 14, Jayna Gronewold with 11 and Schridde with 10.

On the service line Emily Condon had 5 aces, while Marty and Schridde had 2 aces each.

“The team did a great job tonight of pulling together when we needed it most and everyone stepped it up to get the win,” said head coach Abby Crowser.  “We were able to be successful in sets 3, 4 and 5 because every single person on the court did their job. We served tough when we needed it most, our backrow made great passes to our setter so we could set up our offense and our hitters terminated the ball. We also had exceptional performances tonight by several players. Bailey Marty had a record setting 52 dig match, Anya Maack had a career high 19 kills and Avery Wanner has done such a wonderful job of stepping into the setter role for us and being a leader. The team deserved the win tonight because they fought hard for it and never gave up. It’s so fun watching them improve together match by match.”

M State will travel to LaCrosse, Wisconsin on Friday night to face Western Technical College and then head to Rochester for an afternoon match with the Yellowjackets on Saturday.
