The West Central Area varsity boys were first and the girls were third behind Minnewaska Area and Pequot Lakes on Tuesday at a Cross Country Invitational in Melrose.  “You couldn't have asked for a nicer evening to have a cross country meet and Melrose does an incredible job running their meet,” commented WCA Head Coach Austin Hanson

“The varsity boys ran smart races,” noted Hanson. “They were running in a pack for the majority of the race before breaking up and the experience of our seniors, Alex Salwasser, Kade Runge, and Shad Swanson really stood out.”  Alex, Kade, and Shad received second, third, and seventh with Roman Mihailovschi receiving tenth and Eli Bergman receiving 15th.  “We know that we will need all of these boys strong in the end to compete for a state title, and we cannot wait to have junior Peyton Hanson returning for us within the near future to help us accomplish that goal,” Coach Hanson continued. “Freshman Simon Moritz crushed his PR in his first scored varsity meet, running a 20:30 and just scratching the surface with his potential.”

Varsity girls ran very fast times, with Lexi Bright leading the pack and receiving second overall with a time of 19:50.  Sophomore Terina Blasyck had a great race with a time of 21:40, and senior Victoria Junker broke her PR as well with a time of 22:35.

“Looking to the future, we are so excited to be returning to Milaca for the Mega Meet on Saturday,” added Hanson.  “The atmosphere of that meet is unrivaled, and we hope that the runners have a blast competing against hundreds of other kids per race.  Varsity boys will race at noon followed by Varsity girls at 1:45.”
