Nuggets Compile 314 yards in 41-18 Win Over Crookston

Hawley compiled 261 rushing yards and 314 yards of total offense on Friday night as they recorded a 41-18 win over the Crookston Pirates on the Pirates home field.  John Vetter led the Nuggets with 93 yards on 10 carries, while Samuel Burkel ran for 64 yards on 12 attempts and Derek Tibbetts added 59 yards on 7 carries.

Crookston took the early lead as George Widman delivered a pick-six with 5:48 left in the opening quarter.  Hawley took the lead on the ensuing kick-off as Burkel went 76 yards and then booted the extra point for a 7-6 Nuggets lead.

The teams exchanged scores in the second quarter as the Nuggets took a 14-12 halftime lead.  Jack Doda hit Ethan Boll with a 18-yard TD pass with 10:30 left in the half for a 12-7 Crookston lead.  With 3:06 remaining Vetter scored for Hawley on a 15 yard run and Burkel again converted the PAT kick, making it a 14-12 advantage for the Nuggets.

The Nuggets built their lead with 27 unanswered second half points, starting with a 22 yard run by Burkel with 9:37 left in the third quarter.  Hayden Grani then hit Ethan Magnussen with a 20 yard pass to the end zone and Burkel tacked on the extra point to make it 27-12.  A one yard run by Carson Brew and a Burkel kick took the lead to 34-12 with just twelve seconds left in the third.

Lucas Schenck found the end zone for the final Hawley score of the game with 6:38 remaining in the fourth quarter when he carried the ball over the goal line from the 5 yard line.  Burkel made it 5-for-6 on extra-point kicks, giving Hawley a 41-12 advantage.  Jake Erickson connected with Cade DeLeon on a 5 yard TD pass for Crookston with 2:58 to play, putting the final score at 41-18.

Grani completed 2 of the 3 passes he attempted for 53 yards.  Joey Aakre hauled in one pass for 33 yards and Magnussen had the other reception for 20 yards.

Defensive leaders for Hawley were Wyatt Dunham with 5 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles and Aakre with 5 solo tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss.  Bryant Carlisle and Brady Gratton each had an interception in the game. Magnussen also had a sack.

Ethan Boll led Crookston with 47 yards rushing on 8 carries and Doda completed 4-of-7 passes for 41 yards.  DeLeon caught a team high 3 passes for 28 yards.
