The West Central Area volleyball team improved their season record to 9-1 with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the Hancock Owls on Thursday night.

“It was an exciting night in Barrett tonight,” exclaimed WCA Head Coach Missy Foslien. “The Knights had a little trouble to start the game but got things rolling after set one.  We allowed a couple runs of serves and missed some of our own serves. The team was hungry though, and came out serving aggressively, blocking well and swinging hard.  I told the girls we were just getting started.  They never looked back.  In set two the Knights kept the momentum with some good runs of serving by Mya Foslien, Whitney Westrom, and Elizabeth Rustan.  Anytime we can get a run of three to four serves in a row helps.  Halle Foslien also had some really nice blocks which kept the Owls from gaining confidence.  They continued to swing and find some open areas on our side, but we really took care of getting touches to slow down our play and pick up the digs.  In Set three Elizabeth Rustan had a great run of serves and Mya Foslien attacked the ball well from the outside.  Set four got closer than it should’ve, as the Knights had an early lead but let the Owls inch back. There wasn’t ever a lead change which helped the Knights keep their composure and they just kept pushing to finish it off. Addison Staples finished the game with a nice shot from the outside down the line.  The girls were really playing with heart and having fun.  When you have two hitters putting down thirty-five kills (Elizabeth Rustan - 17 and Mya Foslien – 18), that’s hard to stop.  This win was needed after Tuesday’s disappointing five set loss against Wheaton.”

The Knights were led by Whitney Westrom (20/20 serving, 3 aces, 4 kills), Elizabeth Rustan (22/24 serving, 2 aces, 17 kills, 2 blocks), Macy Grosz (14/14 serving, 33 set assists, 25 digs, 1 kill), Halle Foslien (14/15 serving, 2 aces, 5 kills, 2 blocks), Mya Foslien (12/12 serving, 1 ace), Kaitlyn Hansen (13 digs) and Addison Staples (4 kills, 1 block).

The Knights will hit the road next week, facing Ortonville and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.
