The West Central Area volleyball team recorded a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) win over the Ashby Arrows on Thursday night.

The Knights were led by Whitney Westrom (11/12 serving, 3 aces), Halle Foslien (12/12 serving, 3 aces, 12 kills, 3 blocks), Macy Grosz (22/23 serving, 1 ace, 26 set assists, 16 digs), Sophie Sanstead (19 digs), Elizabeth Rustan (12 digs, 10 kills, 1 block), Madelyn Westrom (11 digs), Mya Foslien (7 kills) and Addison Staples (2 blocks).

“The Knights had a great night at the service line tonight going 69/72 as a team,” said Head Coach Missy Foslien.  “In Game one Whitney Westrom and Elizabeth Rustan had some runs in serving, and just tremendous hustle by our defensive players Madelyn Westrom and Sophie Sanstead, as the Arrows came out swinging strong with some attacks from the back row. Games two and three Macy Grosz and Halle Foslien had long runs of serving as well.  Lexi Hunter came in and played a steady right side and added a couple of nice plays. Halle Foslien had a career high 12 kills on the night and 3 ace blocks.  Her play really gave our team the confidence we needed. Smart setting by Macy Grosz helped spread our offense out and often our middles were hitting against a solo block in the middle.”

The Knights will now head to Wheaton on Saturday for a tournament.  Then next Tuesday they will travel again to Wheaton to face the Warriors and Hancock on Thursday.  “This next week will be a good test for the Knights to see where we stack up against some of our toughest opponents,” said Coach Foslien.

Leaders for Ashby were Ryleigh Brendmoen (7/8 serving, 8 digs, 4 kills), Haleigh Brendmoen (8/8 serving, 1 ace, 12 digs, 2 kills), Catherine Koefod (7/7 serving, 2 aces, 12 assists), BrookeLinn Finkelson (3 kills), Celi Nelson (7/7 serving, 7 kills), Livy Johnson (3 kills) and Lucy Ohren (7/8 serving, 1 ace).

“We are still working on blending new players and finding our footing, but seeing moments of great cohesiveness throughout,” noted Ashby Head Coach Hayley Stevens.  “We just need to grasp onto that and hold it through a full set.  WCA had a strong outside cross court game that pulled our passers in and out on coverage, and they worked the court well tonight.  Scrappiness was fierce on both sides and we saw some really long volleys with a lot of movement from both sides of the court.  We are looking forward to a tourney this weekend in Montevideo to get a lot of court time as we continue to work on finding our niche.”
