West Central Area took first place in the boys’ varsity race at the Minnewaska Area Invitational on Tuesday, scoring 30 points.  Redwood Valley was second with 59, Staples-Motley also had 59 points and took third place.  The host Lakers had 92 points and Osakis was fifth with 111.  The Knights were third in the girls’ race with 78 points, one point better than Redwood Valley.  Minnewaska Area was first with 38 points, edging out Staples-Motley with 39.

“The Knights, as a whole ran well, with the varsity boys and girls receiving 1st and 3rd, respectively,” said Head Coach Austin Hanson. “Many personal records were broken here, such as Eli Bergman who shaved a minute off of his previous best.  Shad Swanson ran a great race, cutting 15 seconds off of his PR. The varsity girls improved from the first race of the year, with Lexi Bright, Terina Blasyck, and Alexa Blume all improving by at least 30 seconds.  There is still plenty of work to do, and the teams that we ran against are going to continue to get better.”

Olivia Danielson (19:21.00) of Minnewaska Area and Kyanna Burton (19:21.07) of Staples-Motley finished an extremely close first and second in the girls’ varsity race, with Aften Robinson (19:32.65) of Staples-Motley taking third and Lexi Bright (19:52.34) of the Knights coming in fourth.  Blascyk (21:56.53) was fourteenth, Blume (22:33.05) sixteenth, Kennedy Porter (23:18.72) twenty-first and Blaire Rueter (23:24.36) twenty-third for WCA.

Alex Salwasser (16:56.83) and Kade Runge (17:06.89) finished first and second overall to lead the boys.  Swanson (17:29.40) was seventh, Roman Mihalovski (17:39.57) eighth, Bergman (17:56.33) twelfth, and Neko Moran (18:38.26) fifteenth.

“We're very proud of our junior high boys and girls, who both raced great,” added Coach Hanson. “Aaron Biss received 1st in the boys JH race and Kyra Beyer was 3rd in the girls JH race.  The girls JH team received 1st place after a tiebreak to the 6th runner, Izzy Strunk.  We are very proud of the effort that they put in and their progress so far has been awesome.”

The next meet for West Central Area is Monday (9/13) at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle with junior high boys starting at 4:30 PM.
