The West Central Area/Ashby Knights football team overcame a 12-8 halftime deficit and scored with 1:05 remaining in the game to hand the Barnesville Trojans a 14-12 defeat on Friday night in Barrett.

The Knights finished with 214 total yards (143 passing, 71 rushing) and the Trojans had 153 yards, all on the ground.  Barnesville lost 3 fumbles in the game and the only Knight turnover was an interception.

Evan Paulson (8 completions, 14 attempts, 143 yards, TD, 4 carries, 27 yards), Anthony Sykora (7 carries, 34 yards, TD, 1 reception, 8 yards) and Torin Olson (4 receptions, 118 yards) led the Knights on offense.  Defensive leaders were Carson Spangler (6 solo tackles, 1 sack) and Beau Robinson (4 solo tackles, 1 sack).

Barnesville got on the board first when Noah Krause scored on a one yard run.  With 4:25 left in the first quarter Sykora scored on a 29 yard run for WCA to tie the game at 6-6.   A 72 yard TD run by Cameron Heng in the second quarter put Barnesville in front 12-6.  A 46 yard pass from Paulson to Olson with just over a minute left in the game tied the game and a two-point conversion run by Paulson provided the game winning points.

“We played bad enough to lose, we had costly mistakes at the wrong times,” said Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “We turned the ball over right before half at the four yard line and we had another fumble inside the 15 yard line, clean that up and we are up by 3-4 scores at half.  That is part of the game, we need to get better and execute better.  Not sure if we thought we were going to show up and it would be easy, but we didn't make the plays when we needed to.  Defensively, besides a couple passes they completed, I was pleased with our effort vs the run, we have to get better at covering the pass and getting a pass rush of some sort.  The kids played hard and I know they worked hard, but we have to come back on Monday and work harder and execute especially on offense a lot better than we did on Friday night.  I still think this team can do some amazing things this year but they are going to have to work at it and get better each and every week and in every facet of the game.”

Heng had a nice night running the football with 143 yards on 19 carries.  Krause completed 2-of-5 passes for 21 yards and Heng had both receptions.  Jonny Robideau led the defense with 4 solo tackles, 12 assisted tackles, 2 tackles for loss and an interception.  Ethan Larson and Kaden Zenzen each recorded a sack. Zenzen also had 10 assisted tackles, Peyton Pauna had 8 assisted tackles and Krause made one solo tackle and assisted on 7 tackles.

“Cameron Heng had a nice night running, Jonny Robideau played a very good game defensively, Isaac Mantefal kicked for us very well, and those are the three bright spots that jump out to me,” noted Coach Strand.  “I was glad that we didn't play on Thursday night with the rain, but the field was in really tough shape, it was sloppy and water was standing in areas.  That doesn't help our run game much, and we have to get better at passing there is no getting around it.”
