Klefsaas Scored 3 TD's Including Game Winner in OT to Lead Staples-Motley Past WDC

Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek played an overtime game to open the 2021 high school football season on Thursday with the Cardinals winning by the score of 22-16.

Staples-Motley had 221 rushing yards and a total of 242 yards on the night.  Sivert Klefsaas ran for 184 yards on 39 carries and scored all three touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Klefsaas scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and the Cardinals added the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.  WDC responded with a TD run by Payton Rondestvedt and a successful two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8 after one quarter. Rondestvedt’s second TD run came in the second quarter and after another successful two-point conversion the Wolverines led 16-8.

Klefsaas added a 19 yard TD run in the third and the two-point conversion brought Staples-Motley into a 16-16 time, which is the way regulation ended.

In the overtime period, Klefsaas scored the winning touchdown.  Klefsaas also had two interceptions and Isaiah Schultz also picked off a pass.

Wadena-Deer Creek had 284 yards of offense, 191 on the ground and 93 through the air.  Evan Lunde was the leading rusher with 14 carries for 85 yards.  Josh Dykhoff caught 3 passes for 58 yards and Rondestvedt completed 6-of-17 passes for 93 yards.

The Cardinals will host West Central Area/Ashby on Friday night, while Wadena-Deer Creek plays host to Menahga.
