Otters Overcome 15-14 Deficit with Two 4th Quarter TD's to Beat DL

The Fergus Falls football team scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to overcome a 15-14 deficit and hand the Detroit Lakes Lakers a 29-15 loss on Friday night at the Otter Stadium Field.  Carter Thielke completed 11-of-19 passes for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Cole Zierden, who caught six passes for 171 yards.  The Otters had 285 yards of offense.

The Otters scored the first touchdown on an 11 yard run by Thielke, capping a 55-yard drive early in the second quarter.  Jaydon Manteufel added the extra-point kick to give the Otters a 7-0 lead.  An Andrew Johnson interception setup the second TD of the quarter as Thielke hooked up with Zierden for their first of two TD passes on fourth down from the DL 23 yard line.  Manteufel’s PAT kick put the score at 14-0, which is the way the first half ended.

DL took the lead with a couple of second half touchdowns, the first coming on a 4 yard run by Gavin Smith, followed by a two-point conversion run by Matt Carrier, cutting the Otters lead to 14-8 at the end of three quarters.  With 9:49 left in the fourth quarter the Lakers took the lead as they went 65 yards and scored on a 14 yard pass to Hunter Korth from Bradley SwiersEvan Thomas added the extra-point kick to hand the Lakers the lead at 15-14.

The Otters answered with a 65 yard drive of their own, culminating in a 3-yard TD run by Thielke and a successful two-point conversion run by Johnson.  Thielke connected with Zierden on a 71-yard scoring toss late in the quarter and Manteufel’s PAT kick put the final at 29-15.

Carrier led the Lakers ground attack with 12 carries for 119 yards.  The Lakers finished with 196 rushing yards and 61 passing yards for a total of 257 yards on the night.

Sam Sorum had an interception and Cole Wentworth recovered a fumble for the Otters.  Fergus Falls had only one turnover in the game, compared to three for the Lakers.
