The Fergus Falls girls’ tennis team played host to Perham and Detroit Lakes in a home triangular on Friday.  “After a few rainouts, a soggy morning, and a delayed start it was great to get these matches in,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Jamie Lill.

First up for the Otters were the Perham Yellowjackets.  This match was a nail biter, with Fergus Falls taking the match 4-3.  This match played out in the best and most dramatic of fashions.  Madison Anderson won her first singles match fairly routinely in straight sets, but the rest of the Perham singles lineup proved too tough for the Otters. On the doubles side of things, the second and third doubles teams earned their wins fairly routinely.  With the team match all tied up at 3-3, the first doubles team was the last match on court.  Upperclassmen Mackenzie Krava and Leila Nasri battled through a tough first set, before dropping it with just one break at 6-4.  They rallied back and took the second set 6-4.  “Their match, along with the overall team match, fell in the hands of a third set super-tie breaker,” said Lill.  “Mac and Leila played some of the most steady, smart and confident tennis in that breaker to come away with the 10-6 win.  It was really a great match for these girls and our team as a whole.”

Next, the Otters faced the Lakers and came out on top 5-2.  The Otters went with the same lineup as the first match.  In singles action, Madison Anderson had her hands full at first singles.  Madison earned the first set 6-4 before finding herself down 4-5 in the second set.  “Madison really turned it on at this clutch point in her match and rallied off three straight games to earn the second set 7-5,” reported Lill.  “This was a big win for Madison.  Isabella Abrahams played some tough tennis for us today in the second singles slot as well.  After finding herself down 2-3 in the first set, Bella was able to take 4 of the next 5 games to earn the set 6-4. She continued to cruise a bit in the second set 6-1.  Bella is one of those competitors you can just never count out.  She fights tooth and nail for every single point and that tends to weigh on her opponents.”

The Otters swept the doubles side of action in this match as well.  Mac and Leila were so mentally tough throughout their match today.  They won it 6-4, 6-4 and it was highly contested the entire way.  Cyntreya and Ashtyn rolled through their first set 6-0 before dropping 4 straight games to start the second set.  They did a very nice job of refocusing and dialing back in on what was working for them and were able to win 7 of the last 8 games to take the match in straight sets.  Mia and Hannah looked really good at third doubles.  They are showing consistent, aggressive play that is fun to watch.  This new duo is finding its groove fast.

“Overall, today was a great day for our girls,” noted Coach Lill.  “We are starting to see some consistency on the doubles side of things and it was awesome to see us win all six of our doubles matches.  The girls earned a couple of tough team victories.”

Next up for the Otters is a dual against St. Cloud Tech/Apollo Crush in St. Cloud on Tuesday at 4:30.
