OTC Opens Cross Country Season at Brave Like Gabe Meet

The Otter Tail Central Bulldogs opened up their season with the Brave Like Gabe invite in Perham on August 28th. Competing with 18 other teams in what was the biggest meet in two years as meets were limited to 3 teams last season due to MSHSL Covid-19 procedures. 

In the Junior HIgh 2 mile races, Mae Hegemister led the way for the girls with a time of 16:29, Delia Trebugge followed with a 16:52, and Clarie Kremmer ran a 21:27. On the guys' side they ended up finishing in 8th place. Gabe Lindstrom and Ryan Despard were the teams first runners with the time of 14:05 and 14:07. They were then followed by Jack Robinson 15:22, Matt Brandborg 15:41, Logan Jenson 16:22, Fred Scherfenberg 16:41, Cade Strege 17:52, Mason Hoyt, 17:52, MaCade Barbe 18:01, Oren Brackin 22:30, and Ed Brackin 25:46.

“It was fun to see many junior high runners compete in their first ever cross country race,” Head coach Brady Speicher stated. “Last week we held a two mile time trial and every single runner ran faster today. We have a great group of junior high kids and I’m excited to see them progress as the season goes on.”

For the Varsity and Junior Varsity race, athletes ran a 5k (3.1 miles), the girls ran in a field with 195 runners. Leading the way finishing in 22nd place was Norah Froslee, her time of 21:19 puts her 3rd all time for OTC top ten list. Kyleigh Schebeck finished in 38th with a time of 22:16,  Erika Heibel was 58th in 23:25. Rounding out the varsity squad was Ally Goodman, Raeanne Frost and Laney Frost in times of 25:02, 25:11, and 25:12. The girls ended up taking 13th place.

Senior Isaac Scherfenberg's time of 18:19 placed 29th and led the boys to an 11th place finish as a team. Blake Alozno was the second Bulldogs across the finish line in 19:20, followed by Joseph Froslee 19:59, Peter Newark 20:32, Jonas Hegemeister 20:54, Kyle Tierney 21:07, and rounding up the top 7 was Talyn Setterholm in 21:51. The rest of the Bulldogs made up the JV team who finished 8th. Noah Mansker 21:52, August Wicklund 22:01, Aidan Heggem 22:29, Dawson Bushman 22:34, Norman Hoff 23:04, Quin Condiff 28:04 and Cayden Mansker 29:29.

“For the first race of the season I thought our teams went out and competed really well,” stated Coach Speicher. “It was awesome to see Norah run one of the fastest times in OTC history. Almost all the schools that beat us are in a different class than we are so I am extremely happy with how we did. Going forward we are going to use this meet as our starting point, and see how much faster we can get to accomplish our goals for the season.”

The Bulldogs will compete again Thursday September 2nd in New York Mills.
