Breck Grove’s first year as head coach of the Underwood volleyball team was one of great challenges.  First of all, replacing a coaching legend like Diane Ross was going to be a tough assignment to begin with, but couple that with the loss of several key players to graduation, the delay to the start of the season and an abbreviated schedule due to COVID and the challenges were even more magnified.  The Rockets were able to win six of the seven matches they played before they were quarantined, ending their season.

“With the uncertainty due to COVID, we were just excited to be able to play,” acknowledged Coach Grove.  “After a season opening loss, we were happy to finish out the season with wins, unfortunately our season was cut short due to our team being quarantined.”

As Grove and assistant coaches Carly Jensen and Kali Koehn look to year two, they do so having lost Brooke Hovland (M State) and Reese Richards to graduation, and Josey Bugbee, a senior this season, to injury.

Returning starters include seniors Amber Frigaard (Defensive Specialist) and Brianna Evavold (Libero), juniors Moraes Bugbee (Middle Hitter) and Alayna Evavold (Middle Hitter) and freshman Kallyn Grove (Setter).  Evavold, Bugbee and Frigaard are team captains.

Grove will be looking to junior Becca Johnson (Setter/Defensive Specialist), and sophomores Ezrah Baker (Outside Hitter) and Elizabeth Lukken (Outside Hitter) to step into varsity roles.

“We have a hard-working group of girls who love to compete,” commented Coach Grove.  “We are looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season as a team.”

Grove says Henning, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Breckenridge are the top teams in Section 6A.
